Immune Series - Part 4 Connection Between Immune Health And The Gut

Mar 14, 2021 Rosemary Ferguson

All the symptoms associated with allergies like eczema, asthma and hay fever are signs of internal inflammation, including redness, swelling, and itching. Thus, in order to get rid of the allergies, you have to get rid of the inflammation and hyperreactivity in the body. The place to start, as with so many things, is in your gut, and caring for your gut is essential for a strong and healthy immune system!

Skin Care Powered by Functional Nutrition Part 2

Mar 07, 2021 Kat Burki

In 2008 I was working in the healthcare profession and renovating homes on the side. I was lucky enough to meet skincare formulators from upstate New York. They were hand batch formulators, who also had a solid understanding of ingredients. I had no idea that this world existed and didn’t realize, at the time, what exactly was to come as far as Kat Burki Skincare was concerned. I was merely intrigued, and incredibly impressed, with their work. Understanding the basic principles of nutrition and healing - it was inspiring to think you could actually create formulas to heal an organ, through topical applications.

Immune Series

Jan 31, 2021 Rosemary Ferguson

Our immune systems are truly amazing, every day keeping alert for foreign pathogens in the body. On occasion, they must suddenly identify, and respond correctly to, any of the countless enemy microbes that may be trying to invade.

Hormones and the Aging Process

Dr. Fred Bloem is a holistic and integrative medical practitioner. After several years as a traditional allopathic physician, it became clear to him that Western medicine, as it is being taught and practised by most physicians today, has its limitations. One of his main concerns, was that many of the conventional Western medical treatments, do not address the underlying causes of a patient’s illness. He recognized that many common diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and others were linked to obesity.

Everything You Need to Know About the Skin Microbiome

Jan 24, 2021 Nourish Editors

It feels as though every day we hear about a new skincare ingredient, product, or condition. Living in a global pandemic for close to a year now, has taught people more about their skin conditions than ever before. Think about it, we all have ample time on our hands to research just about anything. With mask-related acne on the rise, or “maskne” as they call it, people want solutions, and they want them now. At Nourish, we decided to dive a little deeper into the world of adult acne, specifically how it’s connected to our internal health.

Skincare Powered by Functional Nutrition

While studying Nutrition as an undergraduate, I learnt about the body and how it responds to its environment, toxins, nutrition and stress, which is what later inspired me to progress and understand the importance of skin care.

The Wonderful World of Functional Mushrooms

Dec 27, 2020 Nourish Editors

When you think of mushrooms, what first comes to mind? Portobellos? Those little, white button mushrooms on pizza? Or the kind that people consume for hallucinogenic effects? There’s actually a whole side of mushrooms that you might not be aware of, and it lies in the world of functional mushrooms. This is where we can use mushrooms to heal ourselves.

3 Day Juice Fast with Rosemary Ferguson

Nov 30, 2020 Rosemary Ferguson

Juice fasting has become a popular way for people to detoxify their body and lose weight, provided they do it in a healthy way, and for a limited time. I would suggest 3 days, any longer and it can become difficult, as you may find yourself over-tired and lacking energy (the opposite of what you should be feeling!) Juice fasting consists of cutting out all solid food for a period of time and replacing your entire food intake with various fruit and vegetable juices. Since low-sugar fruits and vegetables contain high concentrations of nutrients and antioxidants, low levels of calories, and almost no fat; this can be an excellent way to get your health back on track and flood your body with essential nutrients. In most cases, a juice fast also means eliminating all of the dietary fibre from your diet, as a juicer will prevent any of those fibres from being included in the juice.

Five Nail Conditions—And What They Say About Our Health

Oct 25, 2020 Nourish Editors

When most of us think of nails, we think of picking a manicure color. But to doctors, the nails can reveal tons about our internal health. We spoke to a host of experts about what our nails are trying to tell us—and how to listen. According to integrative medicine doctor, Dr. Taz Bhatia, “the key health signs of your nails include overall nail strength—i.e. do they break or split easily, and their color.” Our nails can send clues not just about how we’ve been treating them (one too many gel manicures) but sometimes also hint at our internal health as well. These are some of the “symptoms” to keep an eye on when it comes to your nails and your overall health—and though it might be tempting to self-diagnose, we recommend always discussing any changes to your routine, or supplements with a doctor.

Healthy Keto by Rosemary Ferguson

Oct 18, 2020 Rosemary Ferguson

High fat, low carb - NourishAlso known as the Keto diet, it is based on 3 main principles: high fat, low carb, and moderate protein intake. The point is not to get too hung up on percentages, and don’t count your calories. I tend not to get bogged down with the nitty gritty, just be roughly aware of your intake.

Our Mental Health - Anxiety & Stress

Oct 11, 2020 Nourish Editors

Navigating the modern world is tough enough, but add in the first global pandemic to happen in the last hundred years, and you have yourself a recipe for full-blown, full-time anxiety. As most have traded offices for a cramped corner at home (the place we've built as a sanctuary), we're forced to work where we play, deeming it a separation-free zone. It's a situation only rivaled by those who've had to step in as both parent and teacher to homeschool their children with limited support. And it's not as if you can step out for an escape, which only enhances feelings of cabin fever none of us have experienced in the past. Doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine Dr. James H. Bae tells us, "in addition to anxiety, many suffer from depression, isolation, fear, shame or experience this challenging time of the pandemic as a form of trauma."

The Ultimate Beauty & Body Detox

Sep 28, 2020 Kat Burki

About a month ago, we created an online group interested in following along with my Ultimate Beauty and Body Detox protocol. This seven-day detox plan was based around renewal - renewing your skin, while at the same time switching your body to burning clean fuel. The idea behind it, is that the two together would bring stronger results, both within the body and the skin. I will also add mind here. Every morning I sent motivational emails that also suggested mindful exercises.

What Is Your Gut Telling You? Part 3

Aug 31, 2020 Rosemary Ferguson

If you are suffering from gut issues, you are unlikely to be absorbing sufficient essential nutrients from your food, which your body needs for good health. If the gut is not healed, then long-term implications for your health can be very serious. Here is a list of some of my go tos and some of the big no no’s. There are also some useful tips, that may help you on your journey to healing and caring for your gut.

What Is Your Gut Telling You? Part 2

What Is Your Gut Telling You? Part 1

Aug 20, 2020 Nourish Editors

Gut health has become more mainstream in the health and wellness space, but what exactly does a healthy gut feel like? Your gut health can tell you so much about your overall health. If your gut is off it can lead to a number of serious problems. The gut is often referred to as our second brain also known as the enteric nervous system (ENS) because it can operate independently from the brain.

SPF: The Good, The Bad, The Not So Beautiful

Aug 20, 2020 Kat Burki

SPF stands for sun protective factor. It’s a measurement of how long a sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet (UV) B rays. UVB rays are what cause the most damage to the top layer of skin (epidermis) and where skin cancer occurs. There are currently two types of UV protectors: Physical and Chemical. All sunscreen manufacturers whether physical or chemical must abide by FDA regulations to make a SPF claim. My Epidemiology thesis paper in graduate school was on the dramatic decrease of skin cancer cases in Australia after the concerted efforts of their government to provide education on prevention and detection, hats, sunscreen, etc. to its citizens. As these campaigns increased momentum and became mainstream

Vitamin D: Proven to Help Our Bodies Fight Viruses

Aug 19, 2020 Kat Burki

Last month, we picked a few of our power hitters in protecting your immune system, and recommended Cod Liver Oil due to its high levels of vitamin A and D. As scientists rush to understand COVID-19 one piece of validating research has developed, pinpointing those with a Vitamin D deficiency to be more vulnerable to the virus.

A Supplement Story

Jul 23, 2020 Kat Burki

One of the best things we can do when we travel or could be potentially vulnerable to viruses is to build the immune system. Mindful interventions and being proactive when there is no harm, is just a win-win. There are so many supplements out there touted to build and support the immune system and many really do, but we narrowed it down to a few that have proven to pack an effective punch. First and foremost is Vitamin C. We are not featuring Vitamin C in this article because there is so much excellent research on its power including its ability to completely halt viruses that we are leaving it for an article on its own. Remember not to over supplement though with Vitamin C as it could potentially be over stimulating to the immune system.

This was something that has been in my mind for a long time. I loved the feeling the group had - the camaraderie, and the unique bond of accomplishing this together, and the positive energy that came from it – not to mention the results! I would say, for at least thirty years I have been experimenting, studying and reading on diet plans for healthy living. Although I personally do not think being vegan necessarily means being healthier, the diet of this particular detox was plant-based.
